Orator on the wall
A first look at this painting can cause a less than positive
reaction. The drawings look almost as if done by a child, the forms are too
simplified, and the use of color seems primary. However, when looking at it in
detail, we can see that the painter uses lines in an interesting way by
continuously running a specific color back and forth and down and up, he
creates small blocks of color, representing with this technique the cement
holding the bricks within the wall. The use of overlapping colors make the
cement blocks have volume as if they were popping out from the wall. The
outlining of the man’s head is done using a very sharp line to make the perfect
oval, and exaggerated forms to depict his facial features. The care dedicated
to painting the wall makes it seem almost more important than the character.

Siena dis Equis
This painting uses very detail lines to create the image of
a horse over a canvas painted in one color, sienna. I enjoy this painting for
the sheer size and the use of proportions to create the horse, which I find
must be very difficult, as the painting seems to represent the exact
proportions of a real horse. Something interesting not seen very well in the
picture is a large crease lines that runs across the horse’s body. I predict
that the line was used as a x and y axis to draw the horse’s proportions
exactly. I also like the choice of
color. Sienna is associated with the color of earth and a mineral soil. I find
that this represents the simplicity and perfection of mother nature. Overall
the painting gave me a strange vibe as it seems so simple yet very labor
intensive.

This was my least favorite picture as it seemed like a very
basic dart board that contained concentric circles, a circle inside a circle
inside a circle. The use of lines to make the shapes are very defined and were
well designed, making it pleasing to the eye. However, the painting seemed flat
and boring, particularly when looking at the color choices. I tried to find an
interpretation of the painting thinking about nature and the circle of life,
but I was not successful. I did not
enjoy it as, in my opinion, more color should have been used.
